Step Back in Time When You Visit Deruta
The production of hand painted, Italian majolica, porcelain, and pottery is centered in Deruta. The crafts people of Deruta have been perfecting their art for more than six centuries. This Italian city is world famous for its brilliantly glazed ceramics, often called majolica. In Italy, it is called maiolica. People who are familiar with and knowledgeable about Italian ceramics, porcelain, and pottery are certainly familiar with the town of Deruta.
Deruta is located in central Italy in the region of Umbria. It is a wonderful hill town overlooking the Tiber River, near Perugia and Assisi. The clay used in the production of maiolica comes from a nearby town. Every piece of ceramic art from Deruta comes from the land and is painted by hand.

A visit to Deruta is not complete without visiting one of the factories to see the craftsmen at the wheel and the painters delicately painting the intricate designs. The kilns are now fired by electricity, but many of the designs are centuries old and actually pre-date the Renaissance.
Although Deruta is a small town, its artistic reach is world wide. Many examples of masterpieces from Deruta can be found in collections and museums all over the world. In the United States, examples of Derutan artistry can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum in California, the Ringling in Florida, and at the Sackler Collection and the Corcoran Museum in Washington, DC. Additionally, there are fine examples of maiolica in London at the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert; in Paris, at the Louvre, in Dijon at the Musee des Beaux Arts; and in St. Petersburg at the Hermitage. Many fine examples can be found in Germany, Hungary, Poland, the Netherlands and countless museums throughout the world. These very special pieces also grace the collections of many former and present heads-of-state. And, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy maiolica in my own home.
